Le poli des galets dépend à la fois de la nature pétrographique du galet et des phénomènes qu'il a subis. Les roches à grain fin, roches éruptives microgrenues ou microlitiques, roches sédimentaires siliceuses telles que lydiennes ou silex, se polissent bien. Ce poli peut se faire sous l'action du vent (vernis du désert) ou de l'eau, soit seule, soit chargée de particules fines jouant le rôle de «potée d'étain».
