La toxémie gravidique est caractérisée par l'apparition au cours de la grossesse et dans les sept jours qui suivent l'accouchement d'une série d'anomalies qui comprennent hypertension artérielle, œdèmes et protéinurie (pré-éclampsie). Quand l'hypertension est sévère peuvent apparaître des convulsions et un coma (éclampsie).
