At the end of 1990 the WHO/UNICEF Joint Water Supply and Sanitation Monitoring Programme estimated that out of a total population of the world's developing countries of 4.1 billion people, 1,6 billion were without access to an adequate and safe water supply and a little over 2,8 billion were without access to appropriate means of excreta disposal.
