La Commission a adopté deux méthodes : [la] méthode française du coefficient d'utilisation pratique (CUP) consistant à déterminer la masse c de l'explosif étudié, dont l'explosion produit dans un bloc de plomb (cylindre de TRAUZL) une extension de volume égale à celle produite par 15 g de l'explosif de référence qui est de l'acide picrique pur; [la] méthode anglaise du mortier balistique appelée : PMB (puissance au mortier balistique) ou WS (weight strength); elle consiste à comparer les reculs d'un mortier pendulaire quand on tire successivement : une masse donnée de l'explosif étudié, et une masse égale de l'explosif de référence qui est la blasting gelatine. Le CUP de l'acide picrique est pris égal à 100. Le WS de la blasting gelatine est pris égal à 100.
