Fréquemment, les transformations radioactives bêta ou alpha sont suivies par l'émission d'un ou plusieurs rayons gamma. Le rayonnement gamma est un rayonnement de nature électromagnétique analogue aux rayons X mais de longueur d'onde généralement plus courte. Ainsi les transformations des noyaux radioactifs s'accompagnent de l'émission de rayons alpha, bêta, gamma; c'est la détection de ces rayonnements qui permet de mesurer la radioactivité d'un matériau ou d'un objet.
