Onde électromagnétique très énergétique dont la longueur d'onde est de 10-12 mètres.

Fréquemment, les transformations radioactives bêta ou alpha sont suivies par l'émission d'un ou plusieurs rayons gamma. Le rayonnement gamma est un rayonnement de nature électromagnétique analogue aux rayons X mais de longueur d'onde généralement plus courte. Ainsi les transformations des noyaux radioactifs s'accompagnent de l'émission de rayons alpha, bêta, gamma; c'est la détection de ces rayonnements qui permet de mesurer la radioactivité d'un matériau ou d'un objet. Ce sont ces rayonnements qui, lorsqu'ils pénètrent dans la matière vivante, provoquent une atteinte qui peut être préjudiciable aux édifices biologiques et qui constitue la nuisance.
