Afin de s'affranchir de ces voiles qui bloquent toute émission dans le visible et l'infrarouge proche, les deux scientifiques ont utilisé Mambo, un réseau de bolomètres installés sur le radiotélescope de 30 mètres de l'Institut de radioastronomie millimétrique (France). Les bolomètres détectent les plus infimes variations de température et mesurent donc directement l'énergie portée par les photons, au lieu de la transformer en information électrique, comme le font, par exemple, les caméras CCD (pour Charged Coupled Device).
