Le chien court, saute et gambade sur le rivage à la vue des canards; il disparaît et réapparaît, aidé par le chasseur caché qui lui lance des bâtonnets ou une balle. L'activité du chien pique la curiosité des canards qui sont au large et les attire à portée de fusil. Le chien rapporte ensuite les oiseaux blessés ou morts.
