Le satellite Radarsat-2, qui doit être lancé en 2002, sera le satellite SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar- radar à synthèse d'ouverture) le plus perfectionné au monde. Équipé d'un radar de télédétection de nouvelle génération fonctionnant dans la bande C, Radarsat-2 offrira un pouvoir de résolution au sol allant de 3 à 100 mètres dans des largeurs de balayage comprises entre 20 et 500 m. Il sera le premier satellite SAR commercial à offrir une fonction de polarisation multiple, une importante caractéristique qui permet de détecter une vaste gamme de particularités de surfaces et de cibles. L'entreprise McDonald, Dettwiler & Associates a été retenue comme partenaire privé du projet.
