The mature MA protein remains associated with the inner side of the lipid envelope. In addition, MA plays a role in the transport of the preintegration complex to the nucleus. A nuclear localization signal (NLS) has been proposed within the MA protein, located between residues 14-36 and 107-116 of the HIV-1 p17MA protein.

L'une des bases moléculaires du transport nucléaire réside dans l'existence d'une signalétique particulière. De courts signaux peptidiques présents au sein des molécules à transporter sont reconnus par des récepteurs spécifiques et déterminent ainsi la nature de la molécule et sa destination finale au travers de la membrane nucléaire. Le signal de localisation nucléaire NLS (nuclear localization signal) est le mieux caractérisé. Composé d'acides aminés basiques, il permet aux protéines qui le possèdent d'être importées dans le noyau cellulaire.
