Quand le soleil est bas sur l'horizon, l'épaisseur d'atmosphère traversée par le rayonnement solaire augmente, ce qui amplifie l'atténuation par la diffusion Rayleigh et donc modifie le spectre du rayonnement solaire et ce bien entendu plus particulièrement dans l'ultraviolet où ce phénomène est maximum.
