Substance ajoutée à certaines solutions pour en assurer la conservation. La cause principale de l'altération des révélateurs est l'oxydation. Pour la ralentir, on utilise le sulfite de sodium, le bisulfite de sodium ou le métabisulfite de potassium. L'hydroquinone agit comme agent préservateur plutôt que comme développateur dans les révélateurs au métol à faible alcalinité. La concentration optimale en sulfite varie avec la nature du développateur, l'alcalinité de la solution et la température. Le glycin et la paraphénylènediamine demandent peu de sulfite à la différence, par ex., du pyrogallol. Un révélateur dilué doit contenir, proportionnellement à la quantité de développateur, plus de sulfite qu'une solution concentrée. A noter que l'emploi de bisulfite de sodium ou de métabisulfite de potassium comme préservateurs exige une augmentation de la dose d'alcali. 4, record 1, French, - pr%C3%A9servateur
