Surtitling (or supertitling) began rather slowly for opera in the West in the 1980s but by 2000 was standard practice in many opera houses because it is democratic and, crucially, now easy to accomplish. The translation of drama is a deeply complex enterprise but with surtitles a further burden is placed on the translator by the need for instant communication with the spectator. One of the most stringent criteria is length. At two lines of about forty characters for each title, space is at a premium, forcing the translator to look for a highly concise means of expression. 3, record 1, English, - supertitling
