Les systèmes à réponse vocale interactive (RVI) peuvent compléter efficacement le centre d'appels. En passant par des menus vocaux grâce à son téléphone à clavier, le client pourra lui-même s'orienter. Chaque fois qu'il recherchera de l'information générale ou facilement codifiable (un solde de compte, par exemple), il y aura accès directement sous forme d'enregistrement vocal ou d'information parlée grâce à un système de synthèse de la parole.

L'emploi de l'adjectif «interactive» pour qualifier la réponse vocale est à éviter. En effet, la notion de «réponse interactive» est syntaxiquement contradictoire, bien qu'elle soit techniquement justifiée. Lorsque le contexte exige que l'on rende l'idée d'interaction, il est possible de parler soit de fonction interactive de réponse vocale soit de système interactif de réponse vocale.
