The process of determining the amount of a tax levy or dues payable.

OBS

In the case of a municipal real property tax, the assessment is the value for taxation purposes placed on the property to be taxed; an "assessment notice" informs the taxpayer of this valuation, while the notice of the amount of tax to be paid is usually called the "tax notice" or "tax bill". In the case of self-assessed taxes, such as income or corporation taxes, the notice sent to the taxpayer confirming or altering the amount of tax is called the "notice of assessment".

for "assessment": "Assessment" is popularly used as a synonym for "taxation" in general, the authoritative imposition of a rate or duty to be paid, but in its technical signification it is only taxation for a special purpose or local improvement...as distinguished from general taxation.

S'il est vrai que les termes «imposition» et «taxation» sont à peu près synonymes, il est toutefois plus juste de parler d' «imposition municipale» que de «taxation municipale» étant donné que, dans ce contexte, le terme «taxe» ne s'applique qu'à certains prélèvements contre des services ou améliorations locales qui sont d'ailleurs perçus comme des suppléments d'impôts.
