The library technician is assuming an increasing role in the operation of libraries. The training of library technicians enables them to carry out standard library procedures in those areas where a university education is not required but where the complexity of the work requires more than clerical competence.

The term "library technician" is recognized by the Canadian Library Association; courses or at least training in "library techniques" are compulsory.
