On demande à l'auditeur de choisir entre deux éventualités voisines : par exemple, bile ou file, vol ou fol, goutte ou route... On arrive ainsi à classer les systèmes en fonction de leur degré de dégradation selon six traits distinctifs : son voisé, nasal, grave, interrompu, vocalique, compact. En pratique, ce test de rimes s'effectue sur 220 mots bien choisis et mesure l'intelligibilité des systèmes de synthèse vocale.
