A polymer or blend of polymers that does not require vulcanization on crosslinking during processing, yet has properties, at its service temperature, similar to those of vulcanized rubber; these properties disappear at processing temperature, so that further processing is possible, but return when the material is returned to its service temperature.

The leading commercial types are styrene block copolymers having a structure which, unlike the random distribution of monomer units in conventional polymers, consists of polystyrene segments or blocks connected by rubbery polymers such as polybutadiene, polyisoprene, or ethylenebutylene polymer.

Il y a lieu de mettre à part une classe d'élastomères qui se caractérise non pas par des propriétés chimiques les destinant à des usages spéciaux, mais par le fait qu'ils peuvent être utilisés sans avoir été vulcanisés et, en conséquence, être mis en œuvre comme des plastiques : celle des élastomères thermoplastiques. Les premiers, mis sur le marché au cours des années 1960, sont des copolymères, dits copolymères-blocs, constitués en principe de trois longues séquences : une séquence centrale élastomérique (polybutadiène ou polyisoprène) d'assez grande longueur et deux séquences terminales non élastomériques (polystyrène) plus courtes.

Les élastomères thermoplastiques comblent le vide qui existait jusqu'alors entre les caoutchoucs et les matières plastiques. [...] Vis-à-vis des plastiques, ils représentent un complément de gamme en apportant deux caractéristiques importantes : la fonction élastique, la possibilité accrue de réalisation de produits souples (sans additif) qui demeurerait jusqu'alors limitée au PEbd et au PVC plastifié.
