La temperatura del agua de mar varía entre -2 °C (aguas polares) y 42 °C (máximos valores registrados en aguas costeras someras). El rango de temperaturas en tierra es mucho más amplio y abarca desde los -68 °C (Siberia, 1982) hasta los 58 °C (Libia, 1922). Esto da cuenta del gran poder termoestabilizante del mar.
