Le 16 mai à Kourou,pour la première fois depuis juillet 1995,le Banc d'Essai des Étages Accélérateurs à Poudre (BEAP) retentissait du rugissement d'un Moteur à Propergol Solide (MPS)d'Ariane 5 en essai à feu. A la différence des essais précédents,celui-ci avait pour objet non la mise au point ou la qualification de l 'accélérateur mais la validation de plusieurs modifications qui amélioreront les performances d'Ariane 5 et réduiront ses coûts de fabrication.
