Aunque normalmente se llama viernes negro al 24 de octubre de 1929, en realidad ese día fue el jueves negro. Con la expresión de viernes negro a lo que realmente se hace referencia en EE.UU. es al 24 de septiembre de 1869, cuando la Tesorería suspendió la venta de oro. En el Reino Unido se identifica el viernes negro con el 11 de mayo de 1866, fecha en que quebró la banca londinense Overend and Gurney, cuyo colapso tuvo mucha incidencia en un gran número de empresas.
