On appel ventilateur mécanique un appareil capable d'insuffler un mélange gazeux plus ou moins riche en oxygène dans le système respiratoire d'un patient équipé d'une tube d'intubation translaryngé ou par une sonde de trachéotomie.

OBS

Habituellement, l'insufflation mécanique correspond à un volume courant spontané, elle est réalisée par une augmentation de la pression buccale au-delà de la pression alvéolaire. La fréquence respiratoire est proche de la fréquence spontanée normale du malade, et l'expiration est passive.
