A town, which is a type of municipal corporation, can be formed by a state legislature when a large number of dwellings have concentrated in a particular location. A town is a creation of the state, designed and authorized to perform certain governmental functions on the local level.

The Municipal Board, upon the application of not less than seventy-five inhabitants of a locality having a population of not less than 2,000, may incorporate the inhabitants of the locality or a larger or smaller locality as a town.

(2) The body corporate may also have the name of comté [comtés unis, cité, ville, village, canton (as the case may be)] de ... (municipality). (3) A municipal corporation may continue to use a French version of its name adopted before the coming into force of the subsection though the French version of the name does not conform to subsection (2).
