Les deux principaux facteurs contrôlant la tectonique du massif volcanique du Cantal sont d'une part le système de fractures affectant le substratum (bassins sédimentaires oligo-miocènes) et celui résultant de l'évolution du volcan lui-même (dykes, calderas, fosse volcano-tectonique...). [...] L'utilisation de la gravimétrie couplée au magnétotellurisme devrait permettre de résoudre ce dilemme - fosse volcanotectonique ou nœud de bassins sédimentaires.
