Cette zone de cohue se situe généralement à l'extrémité de sortie du corridor, ou jonction, stérile par laquelle les passagers se dispersent dans la zone d'attente précédant les services des contrôles frontaliers. Elle peut aussi servir en cas de besoin, comme lieu de consigne pour (a) un changement d'avion mis en quarantaine; (b) un contrôle douanier de tous les passagers; (c) des vols transportant des réfugiés.
