Amitermes meridionalis d'Australie est aussi connu sous le nom de termite-boussole : son nid épigé, qui a quatre mètres de haut et trois mètres de large mais dont l'épaisseur est limitée à un mètre, a l'aspect d'un mur, et il est toujours orienté nord-sud, les deux grandes faces étant tournées l'une vers l'est et l'autre vers l'ouest.
