English

Subject field(s)
  • Biochemistry
  • Molecular Biology
  • Genetics
DEF

An analogue of a purine or pyrimidine base, as aminopurine.

CONT

One of the most powerful base analogue mutagens is 5-bromouracil, an analogue of thymine. It is believed to cause mutations because its hydrogen atom at position 1 is not as firmly fixed as the corresponding hydrogen atom in thymine. Sometimes this hydrogen atom is bonded to the oxygen atom attached to carbon atom 6. When this happens, the 5-bromouracil can pair with guanine.

OBS

This phenomenon can lead to incorrect base pairing.

  • Génétique
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Medication
CONT

Compounds structurally related to a particular biologically active compound have been observed to antagonize the biological action of the latter. ... Most structural analogues of a biologically active compound are inert, many are antagonists, but some actually replace the natural active compound in performing the same biological functions.

OBS

analogue: A chemical compound with a structure similar to that of another but differing from it in respect to a certain component; it may have a similar or opposite action metabolically.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Génie chimique
  • Médicaments
DEF
