Il arrive que l'analyse par octave ne donne pas de résultats suffisamment précis [...] Aussi on utilise également la possibilité de faire une analyse plus fine par bandes de tiers d'octave. Cela revient à découper l'intervalle d'octave en trois parties sur l'échelle logarithmique des fréquences. L'intervalle d'octave centré sur 125 Hz se décompose ainsi en trois intervalles de tiers d'octave centrés respectivement sur 100 Hz, 125 Hz et 160 Hz.
