Le problème de la composition du liquide effluent d'une colonne d'adsorbant alimentée en continu par un mélange liquide est connu depuis longtemps par les spécialistes de la chromatographie en phase liquide et concerne la chromatographie par analyse frontale. Dans le cas d'un mélange ternaire des composés 1, 2 et 3,dont les adsorbabilités vis-à-vis de l'adsorbant diminuent dans l'ordre 1 > 2 > 3, on recueille à la sortie de la colonne tout d'abord le composé le moins adsorbable 3, à l'état pur, puis un mélange 3 + 2 et enfin le mélange 3 + 2 + 1 de même composition que le mélange pénétrant dans la colonne. [...] La quantité de composé 3 pur qu'il est possible d'obtenir théoriquement (quantité dite estochiométrique) nécessite de connaître les équilibres d'adsorption des mélanges multiconstituants, équilibres dont on maîtrise mal la théorie.
