Subject field(s)

  • Plate Tectonics
DEF

A linear or arc-shaped chain of volcanic islands formed on the seafloor at a convergent plate boundary.

OBS

There are two types of volcanic arcs: oceanic arcs (commonly called island arcs, a type of archipelago) and continental arcs. In the former, oceanic crust subducts beneath other oceanic crust on an adjacent plate, while in the latter case the oceanic crust subducts beneath continental crust.

OBS

island arc; volcanic island arc: terms used at Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Sector.

Domaine(s)
  • Volcanologie et sismologie
  • Géomorphologie et géomorphogénie
  • Tectonique des plaques
DEF

  • Oceanography
CONT

The shoaling toward the axis of the island arc from that depth is gradual, although seamounts occur sporadically in the arc-trench region.

OBS

arc-trench region: term used at Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Sector.

English

Subject field(s)

  • Oceanography
DEF

The region between an oceanic trench and the adjacent volcanic island arc.

CONT

Dickinson (1973) applied the term "arc-trench gap" to the zone between the trench slope break and the volcanic axis, a region that includes the frontal arc and part of the forearc. The width of the arc-trench gap varies from 50 km to 250 km and increases in proportion to the duration of magmatic activity in the arc.

CONT

The exposure of much more rock to subaerial erosion will greatly increase the volume of sediment which reaches inter-island gap, the arc-trench gap and the back-arc area.

OBS

arc-trench gap: term used at Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Sector.
