Photometeor of the halo family consisting of two luminous arcs obliquely positioned and which sometimes connect parhelia or paraselenae with the small halo.

Lowitz arcs are short arcs showing pale colours, which extend diagonally upward and downward from the parhelia to the 22°-halo. They are visible at just very few occasions. The halo is called Lowitz Arc because Thomas Lowitz was the first who observed and described these arcs in 1794 at St. Petersburg.

OBS

The arcs of Lowitz are explained by refraction through the 60° prism of hexagonal plate ice crystals, oscillating as they descend. The principal axis of the plate must oscillate about the vertical by less than 30° to produce the pattern customarily called Lowitz arcs; larger oscillations lead to more complex arcs spreading far above and below the 22° parhelia and halo.

Parry arcs were named after Sir William Edward Parry (1790 - 1855) who searched for the Northwest passage and described many halos. Parry arcs are rare. There are sunvex and suncave Parry arc visible as thin coloured bows touching the circumscribed halo. Their shape changes with solar elevation.

Four mechanisms have been proposed for producing arcs of various shapes that nevertheless pass through the anthelion. Each of the four predicted shapes has been documented photographically. Each mechanism involves refraction and internal reflection in columnar ice crystals, but they differ in the particular crystal faces involved.

Notice in the drawing routines, especially the arc routines, that familiarity with how the arc routine works is important. In the first arc statement, the command arc is executed and the first point is entered. The center option is chosen before the second point is entered. At this point, you should be able to decipher what is happening in the first nine statements of this function. Next, the arc number value is initialized and set. This value counts how many times you run through this routine. Each time you run through the routine, you create one first arc. The next statement calculates the arc length by calculating the distance between the start and end points of the first arc. Now that you have the arc number and the length of the arcs, you can calculate the overall length of the insulation. Notice the last statement of the routine. That is precisely what happens. In the while loop, the variable total is compared to the wall length. If the total variable is less than the wall length variable, the routine will be run again. Otherwise, the routine is ended.
