A particular kind of artificial turf. The term is often used as a generic description of any kind of artificial turf. Astro Turf was invented in 1965 by employees of Monsanto and patented in 1967 under the name "Chemgrass." It was renamed Astro Turf due to its first well-known use in the Houston Astrodome baseball stadium.

Chaney, à l'emploi de la firme de textiles Chemstrand, fut un pionnier du merveilleux monde du sport en ce qu'il était à la tête de l'équipe de chercheurs qui inventa le gazon synthétique, appelé «Chemgrass» à l'origine, soit au début des années 1960 [...] Début 1966, on installa donc du Chemgrass, dès lors rebaptisé «Astro Turf» et qui se répandit comme la petite vérole dans les grands stades de béton des années 1970.
