The global atmospheric sulphur budget is illustrated in Fig. 1. It shows that the human (anthropogenic) emission is only a portion of the global emissions. However, this is strongly related to the distribution of industrial activity in the world. Parmi les multiples sources de soufre atmosphérique, certaines sont très intenses. C'est le cas des champs d'algues côtiers, dont la production de sulfure de diméthyle (CH3SCH3) peut atteindre plusieurs grammes de soufre par m2 et par an.
