Rares sont les scientifiques qui parlent de dérèglement climatique, le terme étant davantage utilisé par les médias et le grand public. Il ne s'agit pas d'un dérèglement, mais plutôt de «dérèglements» au pluriel. Ce terme renvoie aux conséquences du réchauffement global sur les phénomènes météorologiques et climatiques : les sécheresses ou épisodes de précipitations extrêmes qui se multiplient, ou encore le décalage des saisons avec l'allongement de la durée de la période estivale en Europe, par exemple.
