Le capital naturel critique est un sous-ensemble du capital naturel dont on doit assurer la sauvegarde, notamment parce qu'on considère qu'il n'est pas substituable à d'autres formes de capital (physique, technologique, social ou humain). Par exemple, on peut considérer que les forêts primaires (ou au moins une partie d'entre elles) doivent être absolument conservées et qu'on ne peut pas leur substituer des forêts résultant de plantations. Même chose en ce qui concerne certaines espèces d'animaux sauvages auxquels on ne peut pas substituer des animaux d'élevage, etc.
