Processus d'altération superficielle des roches menant à la formation d'hydroxydes d'aluminium. Ce phénomène est fréquent sous les climats chauds et humides.

L'allitisation correspond à une hydrolyse totale avec précipitation de l'alumine sur place et entraînement total de la silice et des bases. On obtient une accumulation de gibbsite et de boehmite, minéraux alumineux.

Dans le stade ultime [de la kaolinisation], en climat tropical, toute la silice est lessivée. Il ne reste qu'un hydroxyde d'aluminium [...], la gibbsite [...] Ce processus est appelé allitisation [...] mais, comme le plus souvent, le produit d'altération contient une certaine quantité de fer, on parle de ferrallitisation ou de latéritisation.

On distingue une hydrolyse totale dite «allitisation», d'une hydrolyse partielle dite «siallitisation» qui se différencie en 1/monosiallitisation lorsque le processus conduit à une argile 1/1 dont la charge est nulle électriquement [...] ou 2/ bisiallitisation lorsque le processus conduit à une argile 2/1 de type smectique et qui présente une certaine charge [...]
