Dans la littérature socio-linguistique américaine, bilinguisme est opposé à diglossie: le premier terme désigne l'usage indistinct de l'une ou l'autre langue et le passage de l'une à l'autre quels que soient les circonstances et les thèmes abordés, le deuxième la répartition des usages dans chacune des langues selon des circonstances et des thèmes particuliers.

OBS

Le terme de diglossie est parfois employé peu rigoureusement comme synonyme de bilinguisme.
