Space flight to the surface of Mars or other solar system bodies entails the possibility of carrying materials and organisms from the Earth to those destinations, and hence contaminating the planetary surface or atmosphere. This is termed "forward" contamination. The possibility that spacefaring crews landing on the surface of Mars or other bodies beyond the Moon may be exposed to harmful substances, possibly biological but more likely inorganic toxins, is called "backward" contamination. These two modes of introducing alien materials into a planetary environment are the focus of planetary protection concerns. 1, record 1, English, - backward%20contamination

Many short-lived waste components will decay to unimportant radioactivity levels in relatively short periods of time. Their storage in artificial structures can be considered. For the longer-lived and highly toxic actinide fraction of radioactive waste, there appears to be only three basic management options: elimination of waste constituents by transmutation ...; transport off the Earth; and isolation from the human environment somewhere on Earth for periods of time sufficient to permit natural radioactive decay. 1, record 15, English, - transport%20off%20Earth

4, record 15, French, - %C3%A9vacuation%20spatiale
