FACIES SILICATE [4 records]

Record 1 2006-06-01

English

Subject field(s)
  • Iron and Manganese Mining
  • Geochemistry
CONT

Silicate facies. Iron silicate minerals are generally associated with magnetite, siderite and chert. These form layers alternating with each other. This mineralogy suggests that the silicate facies forms in an environment common to parts of the oxide and carbonate facies. However, of all the facies of BIF, the depositional environment for iron silicates is least understood.

CONT

Iron oxide-rich facies with a minimum of associated carbonate or silicate facies are selected for ore.

CONT

DEF

An iron formation in which the principal iron minerals are silicates, such as greenalite, stilpnomelane, minnesotaite, and iron-rich chlorite ...

OBS

Banded iron formation is characterized by its fine layering. ... The simplest and commonest BIF consists of alternating hematite and chert layers. ... James (1954) identified four important facies of BIF. (a) Oxide facies. ... (b) Carbonate facies. ... (c) Silicate facies. ... (d) Sulphide facies.
