Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Sulphide facies. This consists of pyritic carbonaceous argillites ... The main sulphide is pyrite which can be so fine-grained that its presence may be overlooked in hand specimen unless the rock is polished. The normal pyrite content is around 37%. The banding is due to the concentration of pyrite into certain layers. This facies clearly formed under anaerobic conditions. Its high sulphur content precludes its exploitation as an iron ore. 3, record 3, English, - sulphide%20facies
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Element mobility was minimal in oxide facies even under higher rank metamorphism but more extensive in silicate, carbonate and sulphide facies. 4, record 3, English, - sulphide%20facies

3, record 3, French, - faci%C3%A8s%20sulfur%C3%A9

Banded iron formation is characterized by its fine layering. ... The simplest and commonest BIF consists of alternating hematite and chert layers. ... James (1954) identified four important facies of BIF. (a) Oxide facies. ... (b) Carbonate facies. ... (c) Silicate facies. ...
