One of a group of organic compounds, of abundant occurrence in plants which can be resolved by hydrolysis into sugars and other organic substances known as aglycones. 3, record 5, English, - glycoside
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 1 OBS
glycoside: This term is considered by some authors a synonym for "heteroside", defined as a "glycoside which, on hydrolysis, yields a noncarbohydrate as well as a glycose." By comparison, a "glycoside" is an acetal derivative of sugar which on hydrolysis (as by the action of enzymes or dilute acids) yields one or more molecules of a sugar and OFTEN a noncarbohydrate. 4, record 5, English, - glycoside
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 2 OBS
Specifically glycosides are acetals which are derived from a combination of various hydroxy compounds with various sugars. They are designated individually as glucosides, mannosides, galactosides, etc. Glycosides were formerly called "glucosides", but the latter term now refers to any glycoside having glucose as its sugar constituent. 3, record 5, English, - glycoside

Drug which increases the contractility of the heart muscle. The most commonly used glycosides acting on the heart are obtained from the leaves of Digitalis purpurea and lanata, from the seeds of Strophantus kombé and gratus, and also from the squill. Cardiac glycosides act by raising the concentration of calcium ions available intracellularly for electromechanical coupling. They thus exert a positive inotropic effect on the healthy, the hypertrophied, the still adequate, and the failing heart. 2, record 8, English, - cardiac%20glycoside
