Intégration verticale ascendante et descendante : L'intégration verticale peut suivre deux directions. Si elle est ascendante, elle correspond à un mouvement en amont vers les sources de matières premières ou de pièces. Par exemple, une chaîne de supermarchés peut posséder ses propres usines de fabrication de crèmes glacées ou de pâte à pizza surgelée. Si elle est descendante, cela signifie que l'entreprise acquiert des canaux de distribution, par exemple en devenant propriétaire de ses points de vente ou de ses entrepôts.
