LIAISON INTERSATELLITE [4 records]

Record 1 2008-05-30

English

Subject field(s)
  • Satellite Telecommunications
  • Telecommunications Transmission
  • Lasers and Masers
DEF

An innovative communication link that uses laser transmission instead of the traditional Radio Frequency (RF) link.

CONT

The system, dubbed SILEX (acronym for Semiconductor laser Inter-satellite Link EXperiment), will facilitate the transmission of large amounts of data from other satellites in low Earth orbit (typically Earth observation satellites).

OBS

Record created as part of a collaborative pilot project between the Université du Québec à Hull and the Terminology and Standardization Directorate of the Translation Bureau.

Domaine(s)
  • Télécommunications par satellite
  • Transmission (Télécommunications)
  • Masers et lasers
CONT

Record 3 2003-11-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Satellite Telecommunications
  • Orbital Stations
CONT

High data rate intersatellite communications will be needed in applications such as short range links between clusters of satellites in one or adjacent orbital slots, medium range links forming a network in LEO (Low Earth Orbit) and MEO (Medium Earth Orbit) constellations, and longer links between GEO (Geostationary Orbit) satellites. This requires optical intersatellite links or satellite to ground communications links with digital data transfer at 10 Gbps at ranges of 10 000 kilometres.

OBS

Optical intersatellite links offer higher data rates than microwave alternatives. There is no requirement for spectrum approval and interference threats are minimal with laser communications.

Key term(s)
  • optical inter satellite link

French

Domaine(s)
  • Télécommunications par satellite
  • Stations orbitales
OBS
