Stands for "Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line." ADSL is a type of DSL, which is a method of transferring data over copper telephone lines. While symmetrical DSL (SDSL) uploads and downloads data at the same speed, ADSL has different maximum data transfer rates for uploading and downloading data.

This is one form of technology which Bell hopes will really bring the "information highway" to you over the telephone system, rather than through their competitors such as cable companies. Setting aside all the techie stuff, ADSL allows very high speed data movement over your regular copper telephone line. It's called "asymmetric" because the speeds going into your house or business are much greater than the speeds sent from you back up the line.

Providing transfer rates comparable to a T1 line at about 1.5 Mbps, HDSL receives information and sends information at the same high Internet speed through a modem or wireless connection, but it requires two different lines that are separate from your phone line. So if you are not uploading a lot you have no need for this.

HDSL (High bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line), one of the earliest forms of DSL, is used for wideband digital transmission within a corporate site and between the telephone company and a customer. The main characteristic of HDSL is that it is symmetrical: an equal amount of bandwidth is available in both directions. HDSL can carry as much on a single wire of twisted-pair cable as can be carried on a T1 line.

Currently in its experimental phase, VDSL is the fastest DSL [digital subscriber line] technology, with rates from 13 to 52 Megabits per second downstream and 1.5 to 2.3 Megabits per second upstream. The tradeoff for this speed is that the maximum distance from the central office to the user must be between 1,000 and 4,500 feet.
