English

Subject field(s)
  • Radar, Radio Guidance and Goniometry
  • Radio Transmission and Reception

A lobe of an antenna's far-field radiation pattern other than the main beam.

CONT

The side lobes or minor lobes are an unavoidable consequence of the finite size of the antenna. Though undesirable, they ordinarily contain much less power than the main lobe.

OBS

side lobe: designation and definition officially approved by the Joint Terminology Panel.

OBS

side-lobe: designation officially approved by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and by the RADARSAT-2 Terminology Approval Group (RTAG).

OBS

sidelobe: term officially approved by the Electronics and Telecommunications Terminology Committee (CUTEL).

English

Subject field(s)
  • Radar, Radio Guidance and Goniometry
  • Sonar and Underwater Detection (Military)
CONT

Side echoes[:] Squeezing a ... multi-directional radio wave into a directional radar wave is never fully achieved. Not all of the radar wave can be focused by the radar aerial into the main lobe. Some escapes into what are known as side lobes. Side echoes are caused by reflections from the side lobes of the radar beam. They are likely to appear when a target is a good radar reflector and in range of the weaker side lobes.

OBS

side-lobe echo; side echo: The plural forms are "side-lobe echoes," "side-lobe echos," "side echoes" and "side echos."
