Longueur d'un alphabet complet de lettres minuscules d'un corps et d'un style donnés.

En comparant la longueur des divers œils imprimés normalement (ni agrandis ni réduits), on peut déterminer la masse relative d'un œil. La longueur d'alphabet est également exprimée en caractères par pica, c'est-à-dire le nombre moyen de caractères qu'on pourra composer par pica. La longueur relative d'un œil joue un rôle important dans la détermination et l'estimation (calibrage) de la longueur du document imprimé, car un œil ayant un corps plus petit permettra l'impression d'un plus grand nombre de caractères par page que celui dont la masse est plus élevée.
