LONGUEUR BITS [4 records]

CONT

Our [mainframe computer] was installed with the maximum amount of solid-state RAM [random access memory] that could be addressed by the IOM [input/output module] and CPM [central processor module], and that was a massive 8 megabytes. This was a hard limitation as memory addresses were included in fixed length bit fields in the instructions and this limitation was architected into the machine design.

A variable-length bit field is a string of ... contiguous bits that does not necessarily begin on a byte boundary. Thus it may occupy zero to five contiguous bytes.

Security in cryptography comes from the fact that, even if the algorithm is publicly known, there are millions or trillions of possible "keys" that could have been used for encryption. For example, a bit-length of 56 bits makes possible roughly 72 quadrillion keys.

CONT

All other things being equal, cryptographic strength is defined by the length of the cryptographic key (or "bit-length"), which establishes the number of possible permutations. With each bit added to the length of the key, the strength is doubled.

CONT
