One of the engineering challenges to develop lunar robots is coping with the environment of extreme temperatures, vacuum, radiation and dust.

There are several mountain ranges on the moon. Most of them bear the names of terrestrial ranges - the "Alps, Apennines, Carpathians", and so on. ... The lunar surface sensing probe attached to each landing gear footpad, except the forward one, is an electromechanical device. The probes are retained in the stowed position, against the primary strut, until landing gear deployment. During deployment, mechanical interlocks are released permitting spring energy to extend the probes so that the probe head is approximately 5 feet below the footpad. When any probe touches the lunar surface, pressure on the probe head will complete the circuit that advises the astronauts to shut down the descent engine. 2, record 32, English, - lunar%20surface%20sensing%20probe

The term lunar soil is often used interchangeably with "lunar regolith" but typically refers to the finer fraction of regolith, that which is composed of grains one centimeter in diameter or less. Some have argued that the term "soil" is not correct in reference to the Moon because soil is defined as having organic content, whereas the Moon has none. However, standard usage among lunar scientists is to ignore that distinction. Lunar dust generally connotes even finer materials than lunar soil, the fraction which is less than 30 micrometres in diameter. 2, record 41, English, - lunar%20regolith

4, record 41, French, - r%C3%A9golithe%20lunaire

The term lunar soil is often used interchangeably with "lunar regolith" but typically refers to the finer fraction of regolith, that which is composed of grains one centimeter in diameter or less. Some have argued that the term "soil" is not correct in reference to the Moon because soil is defined as having organic content, whereas the Moon has none. However, standard usage among lunar scientists is to ignore that distinction. Lunar dust generally connotes even finer materials than lunar soil, the fraction which is less than 30 micrometres in diameter. 2, record 50, English, - lunar%20dust

2, record 50, French, - poussi%C3%A8re%20lunaire

A night time rainbow is sometimes called a moon bow because it is a reflection of the light of the moon. ... Any rainbow comes from light hitting drops of rain and going into the drop and being reflected off of the inside edge. As the light leaves the drop on it's return journey the other side of the drop acts like a prism and separates it into the colors of the rainbow. ... with moon light it makes something shaped like a rainbow with just a hint color. Moon bows occur in the side of the sky opposite the moon. 2, record 58, English, - moonbow
Record number: 58, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Even though the optics of both is the same, the luminance of the lunar rainbow is much lower. As a result of the eye's reduced sensitivity to color at low light levels, the bow may exhibit little color. There are several reasons why the lunar rainbow is seen much less frequently than the solar bow. While the moon and sun spend equal time above the horizon, when they are both present, only a solar bow can be seen. This, by itself, means that the lunar rainbow could form only half as often. Further, the moon goes through phases, and so even at night may not contribute enough light to produce a discernible bow. Finally, the convective showers in which the rainbow is frequently seen are much less common at night. 6, record 58, English, - moonbow

A lunar halo is a luminous ring that is sometimes seen surrounding the moon. Some parts of the halo are very bright, others are not very bright. Sometimes, only a part of the ring is visible. The halo is produced as moonlight is reflected and refracted through tiny, flat ice crystals in the atmosphere. Halos always are at an angle of 22° away from the moon, due to the hexagonal structure of the ice crystals. 2, record 70, French, - calendrier%20lunaire

The craters that make up so much of the topography of the Moon are probably both from interplanetary rocks colliding with the Moon's surface and from volcanic activity. However it is suspected that volcanic activity has produced only some of the smaller craters; most of the craters are impact craters. 2, record 95, English, - lunar%20crater
