Gateway is a planned lunar-orbit spacecraft that will have a power and propulsion system, a small habitat for the crew, a docking capability, an airlock, and logistics modules. Gateway is expected to serve as an intermediate way station between the Orion crew capsule and lunar landers as well as a platform for both crewed and un-crewed experiments.

An American device for photographic mapping of the Moon, done while orbiting the moon.

In preparation for the Apollo landings, five Lunar Orbiters were flown to the Moon. Three orbited the Moon's equator and provided detailed photograpy of Apollo landing sites. Two were placed into polar orbit and mapped virtually the entire surface of the Moon.

Japanese seismic probe scheduled for launch in 1997.

Sponsored by ISAS [Institute of Space and Astronautical Science-Japan], this probe is to explore the interior structure of the Moon and could provide key data for understanding the origin of the solar system and planetary formation. It is a 520-kg spacecraft to be launched on ISAS's newly-developed M-5 rocket. Following a gravity-assist manoeuvre, it will fly as close as 40 km from the Moon and deploy three 13-kg seismic penetrators. These will burrow 30 cm into the lunar crust. The spacecraft will then be repositioned into a 300-km orbit. The seismic probes will be able to monitor deep moonquakes, mapping the lunar core.

The Lunar prospector is designed for a low polar orbit investigation of the Moon, including mapping of surface composition and possible polar ice deposits, measurements of magnetic and gravity fields, and study of lunar outgassing events. Data from the 19 month mission will allow construction of a detailed map of the surface composition of the Moon, and will improve our understanding of the origin, evolution, current state, and resources of the Moon.
