Titre honorifique décerné à un joueur d'échecs. Initialement le tsar Nicolas décerna pour la première fois le titre de grand maître aux cinq premiers du Tournoi de Petrograd 1914 : Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine, Tarrasch et Marshall. Aujourd'hui la F.I.D.E. a réglementé les titres internationaux et décerne ceux de Grand Maître International (G.M.I.), de Maître International (M.I.) et de Maître de la F.I.D.E. Quant à la F.F.E., elle décerne les titres de Maître National, Maître National Junior, Maître National Cadet et Espoir National Minime.
