The efficiency of a pitcher is evaluated by the following method: the total number of earned runs off his pitching for the year or part of the year divided by the total number of innings he has pitched, the result of the operation being divided by nine.

A pitcher charged with 68 earned runs for 272 innings: 68 divided by 272 = 0.25 multiplied by 9 = 2.25, his earned run average.

OBS

e.r.a.: The correct abbreviation for "earned run average" though the code "ERA" is currently used. Seen on the board during a Montréal Expos baseball match at the Stade olympique, on September 15, 2002: E.R.A. - earned run average.
